Morocco’s wildest, most remote dune sea

Larger, higher and far less visited than Erg Chebbi, Erg Chigaga is the Sahara at its most untamed — a 40-kilometre sea of dunes reached only by 4x4 beyond the last village of M’hamid, where the tarmac ends and the silence begins.

History

M’hamid El Ghizlane was the assembly point for the great trans-Saharan caravans bound for Timbuktu, a 52-day crossing. Chigaga’s dunes and the surrounding hamada still carry the memory of those trade routes and the nomadic families who cross them.

Culture

Nomadic Berber and Saharaoui traditions, desert blues music around the fire, and camps run by families who read the dunes and stars as a map. Far from crowds, the experience is quieter and more authentic than the northern Sahara.

True deep desert — hot days, cold nights, and some of the clearest, darkest night skies in Morocco.

Berber pizza (medfouna) baked in the sand, date-and-almond dishes, and tagines slow-cooked over desert fires.

Geography

Erg Chigaga is a vast dune sea some 40 km long and up to 15 km wide, with dunes rising to around 300 m, far larger than Erg Chebbi. It lies beyond Mhamid El Ghizlane at the end of the Draa Valley, surrounded by flat, stony hamada desert and reached only across open ground by 4x4.

Hiking opportunities

This is desert walking rather than mountain trekking: short, rewarding strolls over the dunes at sunrise and sunset, longer guided dune walks for the energetic, and optional camel excursions. Multi-day walking and camel expeditions through the erg are possible for those seeking a true desert crossing. Our 3-day expedition focuses on dune walks and deep-desert camping.

Getting there

Chigaga is a long overland journey from Marrakech: roughly a full day (about 550 km) via the Tizi n-Tichka pass, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley to Mhamid, then an off-road 4x4 crossing into the dunes. We run it as a private 3-day expedition; it is not a day trip.

Accommodation

Nights are spent in desert camps set deep in the erg, from comfortable tents with proper beds and shared facilities to more refined luxury camps with en-suite tents and fine dining. A kasbah or guesthouse in the Draa Valley often bookends the journey. All camps offer communal dining and campfire evenings under exceptional night skies.

Safety

The deep desert demands respect: travel only with experienced local drivers and guides, carry ample water, and protect against sun and heat by day and cold at night. Sandstorms can occur, so a scarf is essential. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.
