Day 1: Asni → Aït Ourir foothills → Moulay Brahim → return

Depart Marrakech at 8:00 AM for the 1.5-hour drive to Asni (1,180 m), a lively market village at the foot of the Toubkal massif. Walk ancient mule tracks between Berber hamlets and olive groves, climbing gently toward a plateau viewpoint (1,800 m) with a full panorama of the snow-streaked peaks. Stop for mint tea with a shepherd family, then descend through the Moulay Brahim gorge — a cliff-hung pilgrimage village — before a village lunch and the return drive to Marrakech by 7:00 PM.

Food on the trail

Mountain food is fresh, generous and cooked from scratch. Expect harira soup, tagines slow-cooked over olive wood, couscous, fresh bread baked in village ovens, seasonal fruit, nuts and endless sweet mint tea. Dietary requirements — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal — are catered for with advance notice at no extra cost.

Your safety governs every decision we make. Guides carry a comprehensive first-aid kit and are trained to recognise altitude sickness and manage mountain emergencies. We monitor weather continuously and will adjust or turn back a route when conditions demand it. Group sizes are kept small, emergency evacuation protocols are in place (including helicopter evacuation where available), and 24/7 support is available from our Marrakech office throughout your trip. What age is this trek suitable for?

Children aged 8 and over who are comfortable walking 5–6 hours with breaks. The terrain is non-technical but the day is longer than the Imlil family walk.

Is there a steep climb?

One steady climb of about 600 m to the plateau viewpoint, on a clear mule track. We pace it gently and stop for tea at the top. The descent is on the same kind of path.

What is the Asni souk?

A weekly Berber market (Tuesdays) where mountain families trade livestock, produce and crafts. It is a wonderful cultural experience for children — ask us to schedule your trek on a Tuesday.

What is the lunch?

A village lunch with a Berber family: tagine, bread, salad and fruit. Vegetarian options with notice.

How far is Asni from Marrakech?

About 65 km — 1.5 hours each way by private transfer.
