The Best First High-Altitude Trek: A Comparison

High-altitude trekking summit comparison for first-time trekkers

Choosing your first trek above 4,000 m is a big decision. The three most common first high-altitude objectives are Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) and Everest Base Camp (5,545 m) — each non-technical, each iconic, but very different commitments.

This guide compares them on altitude, duration, cost, logistics and risk to help you pick the right first summit.

The Three Candidates

Mount Toubkal (4,167 m, Morocco): 2–3 days, ~€245–385, 90 minutes from Marrakech. The shortest, cheapest, most accessible 4,000 m summit in the world. A genuine altitude test with low commitment.

Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m, Tanzania): 6–9 days, from ~USD 2,000–2,500. The highest walk-up summit in Africa. A serious altitude objective with mandatory guides and a real summit-night challenge.

Everest Base Camp (5,545 m, Nepal): 12–14 days, ~USD 1,200–2,000. Not a summit but a high-altitude trek to the foot of Everest. The most iconic, the most immersive, and the longest commitment.

How to Choose

If you have never been above 3,000 m: start with Toubkal. It is the lowest-risk way to learn how your body responds to altitude, at minimal cost and time. The result directly informs whether to invest in Kilimanjaro or EBC.

If you have some altitude experience and 1–2 weeks: Kilimanjaro is the classic first big summit. If you have 2–3 weeks and want the iconic Himalaya experience: Everest Base Camp. Many trekkers progress Toubkal → Kilimanjaro → EBC over several years.
