The gateway village to Mount Toubkal

Cradled at 1,740 metres in a green amphitheatre of walnut and cherry orchards, Imlil is the beating heart of Atlas trekking. From its terraced lanes, mule tracks climb toward the highest summits in North Africa.

Region: High Atlas · Altitude: 1,740 m

History

For generations Imlil was a quiet Berber farming community trading walnuts, apples and cherries across the mountain passes. As mountaineers discovered Toubkal in the early twentieth century, the village grew into Morocco’s premier trekking hub, yet its Amazigh soul — the terraced fields, the communal irrigation channels, the mosque call echoing between the peaks — remains beautifully intact.

Culture

Life here follows the mountain seasons. Families still harvest by hand, share bread baked in communal ovens, and welcome travellers with mint tea poured from height. Berber (Tamazight) is the mother tongue, and hospitality is a point of honour.

Climate

Cool alpine air year-round. Summers are warm and dry (20–30°C by day); winters bring frost and snow above the village, with crisp, clear skies ideal for winter ascents.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to November for green valleys and stable weather. December to February for winter mountaineering on Toubkal.

Food

Tagine slow-cooked over olive wood, fresh mountain trout, walnut honey, saffron and the ceremonial pouring of sweet mint tea.
