The best time to hike in Morocco is May, June, September and October. June–September is warmest but can be hot in the valleys. Avoid November–April for high routes (cold, snow at altitude).
“When is the best time to hike in Morocco?” has an honest answer that depends on where you are going. The high Atlas and the Sahara follow opposite calendars. This page gives you real temperature ranges, snow risk and crowd levels for every month — not a vague “spring and autumn are nice” — so you can pick the right month for your specific trip.
| Month | Valley temp | At altitude | Snow risk | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 5–15°C | Freezing at night | High above 2,500 m | Only for experienced winter hikers |
| February | 5–15°C | Freezing at night | High above 2,500 m | Only for experienced winter hikers |
| March | 8–18°C | Cold nights | Possible on summits | Possible but not ideal |
| April | 12–22°C | Warming | Unlikely | Good option |
| May | 15–28°C | Perfect, no snow | None | Excellent choice |
| June | 20–32°C | Warm, perfect | None | Excellent choice |
| July | 25–35°C | Perfect at altitude | None | Good but hot in valleys |
| August | 25–35°C | Perfect at altitude | None | Good but hot in valleys |
| September | 20–30°C | Perfect, cooling | None | Excellent choice |
| October | 15–25°C | Perfect, cooling | None | Excellent choice |
| November | 10–20°C | Getting cold | Possible late month | Not ideal |
| December | 5–15°C | Cold | Possible | Only for experienced hikers |
May, June, September and October are the sweet spots for Atlas hiking: mild days, cold but manageable nights, no snow on the high routes, and trails in good condition. May and October are the quietest of these four; June and September are the most popular.
Summer is prime time for the highest routes (Toubkal, Mgoun) because the peaks are snow-free and pleasant while Marrakech swelters below. The catch is valley heat — start early, carry more water, and avoid the desert and Agafay at midday, which are genuinely too hot for walking.
Above 2,500–3,000 m, snow settles and Toubkal becomes a winter mountaineering objective requiring crampons and an ice axe. Lower valleys, the desert and Agafay are cool, clear and blissfully quiet — this is the best season for the Sahara, not the summits.
The Sahara (Merzouga, Erg Chigaga) and the Anti-Atlas (Tafraoute) are best from October to April and dangerously hot from June to August. If you want desert or southern trekking, ignore the Atlas calendar and aim for winter and spring.
| Trip type | Best months | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Toubkal & high Atlas summits | May–Oct (Jun–Sep peak) | Nov–Apr (snow) |
| Day hikes from Marrakech | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | Jul–Aug midday heat |
| Sahara / desert trekking | Oct–Apr | Jun–Aug (extreme heat) |
| Anti-Atlas (Tafraoute) | Oct–Apr (Feb blossom) | Jun–Aug |
| Winter Toubkal ascent | Dec–Mar (with gear + guide) | — |

Only as a equipped winter mountaineering objective. From November to April the upper slopes hold snow and ice, requiring crampons, an ice axe and a qualified winter guide. We run a dedicated winter ascent with all technical gear and instruction. The standard summer routes are not safe in winter conditions.
In the valleys and desert, yes — August midday heat is genuinely too hot for walking. At altitude (above 3,000 m) it is pleasant, which is why summer is prime season for Toubkal and Mgoun. Start early, carry extra water, and avoid the desert and Agafay at midday.
May and October. Both offer mild days, cold but manageable nights, no snow on high routes, fewer crowds than peak summer, and beautiful light — May for spring green and snowmelt rivers, October for harvest colours and stable weather.
The Atlas is relatively dry, but spring (March–May) and autumn can see afternoon showers, and the Ourika gorge can flash-flood in heavy rain. Our guides monitor forecasts and never take clients into gorge sections in threatening weather. Pack a light waterproof shell year-round.
