Nepal's Guided-Trekking Requirement: What Changed
Nepal introduced a requirement that trekkers in the main national park and conservation areas — including the Khumbu (Everest) and Annapurna regions — be accompanied by a licensed guide or porter-guide, or trek via a registered agency. Solo independent trekking without a guide/agency arrangement is no longer permitted in these regions.
The change was made to improve trekker safety and to support the licensed guiding economy. It does not apply to every trail in Nepal — some lower, non-restricted areas remain open to independent walkers — but it covers the flagship trekking regions that the vast majority of visitors use.
In practice, the requirement changes little for most trekkers, who already used guides or agencies for the Khumbu and Annapurna. If you were planning a fully independent Everest or Annapurna trek, you now need to arrange a licensed guide through a registered agency. Always check the current Nepal Tourism Board rules before booking, as implementation details continue to be refined.
