Transvulcania: The Volcanic Island Ultra

Volcanic ridge trail running on La Palma, Canary Islands

Transvulcania is the flagship trail race of the Canary Islands — an ultra-trail on the volcanic island of La Palma, climbing from sea level to the Roque de los Muchachos (2,426 m) and traversing the Cumbre Vieja ridge. The Ultra (~73 km, ~4,400 m of ascent) is the headline distance.

It was one of the early races of the modern ultra-trail era and remains a fixture of the Skyrunner and UTMB World Series calendars.

The Course

The Ultra starts at sea level (Faro de Fuencaliente), climbs the Cumbre Vieja to the Roque de los Muchachos (the island's high point at 2,426 m), and descends to finish in Los Llanos de Aridane. The volcanic terrain, heat and long climbs define the race.

Shorter distances (Marathon, Half Marathon, Vertical Kilometre) make the event accessible to a wide range of runners.
