The great fortified ksar on the caravan road
Rising from the banks of the Ounila River, Aït Ben Haddou is the most spectacular fortified village (ksar) in Morocco — a honey-coloured cluster of earthen kasbahs stacked against a hillside, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the backdrop to countless films. On the southern edge of the High Atlas, it marks the meeting of mountain and desert on the old road to the Sahara.

History
Aït Ben Haddou grew on the caravan route linking Marrakech with the Sudan across the Sahara, its earthen towers guarding merchants carrying salt, gold and spices. Some structures date to the seventeenth century, though the site has been inhabited far longer. Listed by UNESCO in 1987, it has doubled as a film set for productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Culture
A handful of families still live within the old ksar, while most have moved to the modern village across the river. Traditional pisé (rammed-earth) building, communal granaries and Berber craft endure, and local artisans demonstrate the saffron-and-tea painting used to “age” canvases for visitors.
Climate
Pre-Saharan and arid — very hot summers, mild sunny winters and cool nights. Rainfall is minimal, and the light is exceptional for photography most of the year.
Best time to visit
October to April for comfortable temperatures; spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is very hot at midday.

Pre-Saharan tagines, dates and almonds, fresh bread and mint tea served on terraces overlooking the ksar.
Geography
The ksar stands at about 1,300 m on the southern flank of the High Atlas, where the mountains descend toward the desert and the Ounila River meets the road to Ouarzazate. Red-earth hills, palm-fringed riverbanks and open pre-Saharan plains surround it.
Hiking opportunities
The area is better known for its heritage than long treks, but rewarding walks explore the ksar and its towers, the riverbanks, and the trail up the Ounila Valley toward Telouet — a memorable cultural hike past abandoned kasbahs and salt mines. It is a natural end point for the Telouet–Ounila walk.
Getting there
Aït Ben Haddou is about 190 km from Marrakech — around 4 hours by road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass via Ouarzazate. We arrange private transfers, often combining it with Telouet and the Ounila Valley.

Kasbah-style hotels and guesthouses line the modern village across the river, many with rooftop terraces facing the ksar — spectacular at sunrise and sunset. Options range from simple auberges to comfortable boutique kasbahs.
Safety
Cross the river on the stepping stones or footbridge with care, especially after rain. Explore the ksar’s upper levels cautiously and carry sun protection and water — shade is limited on the climb to the granary.
