Across 5 days / 4 nights you cover around 68 km, reaching 1,600 m, walking with a Berber mountain guide through the landscapes and villages of Draa Valley.
- Day 1: TRANSFER DAY — Marrakech to Zagora — 6–7 hrs driving + 1 hr walking · 4 km · max 1,600 m. Depart Marrakech at 06:00. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, stop at Aït Ben Haddou for lunch and Ouarzazate, then follow the Draa Valley road south through increasingly arid palmeries to Zagora — arriving approximately 14:00. A short 1-hour introductory walk through the Zagora palmery before dinner at your riad.
- Day 2: TREKKING DAY 1 — Zagora Palmeries — 6 hrs trekking · 18 km · max 700 m. An early start into the palm oasis corridor. Walk south through the shade of the date-palm canopy, past ancient ksar citadels built from pisé (rammed earth), stopping at Tinfou (small dune) and reaching the village of Jdaid for the night. Desert heat is manageable in the morning; walk at pace and rest at midday.
- Day 3: TREKKING DAY 2 — Tamegroute & the Ancient Library — 5–6 hrs trekking · 16 km · max 700 m. Continue south through the oasis corridor to Tamegroute, home of the 17th-century Quranic library — one of the oldest in Morocco. The resident saints’ tomb and the zellige pottery workshops of the Nassiriyya Brotherhood make this a cultural highlight. Overnight in the village.
- Day 4: TREKKING DAY 3 — M’hamid & the Desert Edge — 4–5 hrs trekking + 1 hr dune walk · 18 km + dune · max 700 m. The final trekking day walks where the Draa valley dries and the Sahara begins. Reach M’hamid el Ghizlane — the last village before the desert — then walk or ride by camel into the dunes for a sunset bivouac camp. Sleep under the darkest skies in Morocco.
- Day 5: TRANSFER DAY — Dune Sunrise & Return to Marrakech — 1 hr dune walk + 7 hrs driving · 4 km · max 700 m. Wake before sunrise for the dune walk in the cool blue light before the Sahara wakes. Breakfast at camp, then the long scenic return drive to Marrakech via M’hamid, Ouarzazate and Tizi n’Tichka, arriving in the early evening.
Accommodation
Three nights in a mix of local riad, village guesthouse and a desert bivouac camp — simple, genuine and increasingly remote as you approach the Sahara. Bedding, meals and blankets are provided at each stop.
Food on the trek
Southern Moroccan cooking: date-sweetened tagines, camel-milk tea with nomads, fresh bread from clay ovens, medjool dates and salads of local vegetables. A camel carries the camp kitchen for the desert section. Vegetarian and dietary needs catered for.
