Ourika Day Hike: The Route, the Experience & Local Tips

What the Ourika Valley day hike is really like — the drive from Marrakech, the riverside trail, the seven waterfalls above Setti Fatma, village tea and lunch, swimming spots, photography and local tips for a better day.

What the Ourika day hike is really like

The Ourika Valley day hike is the classic Marrakech escape — a green river valley, seven waterfalls above Setti Fatma, riverside tea and lunch, and swimming in cold mountain pools. This guide walks through the day as our guides and visitors experience it, with the local knowledge that makes the difference.

The drive up the valley

The day starts with a morning pick-up in Marrakech and the 60 km drive south to Setti Fatma (1,500 m). The road winds up the Ourika valley alongside the river, past terraced gardens, riverside cafés and Berber villages, the peaks closing in as you climb. Setti Fatma is the end of the road and the start of the walk.

The riverside trail

From Setti Fatma the trail follows the river upstream toward the seven waterfalls. The lower section is a gentle riverside walk through cafés and small gardens — lively, green and easy. The sound of the river is constant, and in spring the water is full and dramatic. Most day hikers reach the third or fourth waterfall and return.

The seven waterfalls

Above the lower walk, the seven cascades de Setti Fatma climb up the valley, each a short scramble over rocks from the last. The lower falls are easy; the upper falls require light scrambling and a guide for route-finding and safety, especially after rain. The pools below the lower falls are the swimming spots in warm months — cold, clear and refreshing.

Tea and lunch by the river

Lunch is at a riverside Berber café or guesthouse — tagine, fresh bread, salad and mint tea, with the river beside you. Trout from the river is a local speciality when available. The cafés are family-run and the hospitality is genuine. This is the social heart of the day.

Photography

The waterfalls and green valley photograph best in soft morning light. The river, cafés and village scenes are rich in detail — ask before photographing people. A polarising filter cuts glare on the wet rocks, and a waterproof bag or dry pouch protects your phone near the falls.
