Day 1: TRANSFER DAY — Marrakech to Zagora
Depart Marrakech at 06:00. Cross the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, stop at Aït Ben Haddou for lunch and Ouarzazate, then follow the Draa Valley road south through increasingly arid palmeries to Zagora — arriving approximately 14:00. A short 1-hour introductory walk through the Zagora palmery before dinner at your riad.

Good to know: TRANSFER DAY: 6–7 hours driving + 1 hour easy walk. Not a full trekking day.
Day 2: TREKKING DAY 1 — Zagora Palmeries
An early start into the palm oasis corridor. Walk south through the shade of the date-palm canopy, past ancient ksar citadels built from pisé (rammed earth), stopping at Tinfou (small dune) and reaching the village of Jdaid for the night. Desert heat is manageable in the morning; walk at pace and rest at midday.

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 6 hours. Desert heat — start early, walk in palm shade.
Day 3: TREKKING DAY 2 — Tamegroute & the Ancient Library
Continue south through the oasis corridor to Tamegroute, home of the 17th-century Quranic library — one of the oldest in Morocco. The resident saints’ tomb and the zellige pottery workshops of the Nassiriyya Brotherhood make this a cultural highlight. Overnight in the village.

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 5–6 hours. Visit the Tamegroute library (small admission fee, not included).
Day 4: TREKKING DAY 3 — M’hamid & the Desert Edge
The final trekking day walks where the Draa valley dries and the Sahara begins. Reach M’hamid el Ghizlane — the last village before the desert — then walk or ride by camel into the dunes for a sunset bivouac camp. Sleep under the darkest skies in Morocco.

Good to know: TREKKING + CAMP DAY: 4–5 hours walking to M’hamid + evening dune walk. Wind and sand — bring a scarf.
Day 5: TRANSFER DAY — Dune Sunrise & Return to Marrakech
Wake before sunrise for the dune walk in the cool blue light before the Sahara wakes. Breakfast at camp, then the long scenic return drive to Marrakech via M’hamid, Ouarzazate and Tizi n’Tichka, arriving in the early evening.

Good to know: TRANSFER DAY: 1 hour dune walk + 7 hours driving. Arrive Marrakech ~18:00.

Villages and Berber culture
The Draa valley hosts a layered mosaic of Amazigh, Arab and sub-Saharan cultures — ksar citadels built in earthen pisé, the historic 17th-century manuscript library of Tamegroute, the nomadic Rguibat and M’hamid communities, and the ancient trans-Saharan trade routes.
Food on the trail
Southern Moroccan cooking: date-sweetened tagines, camel-milk tea with nomads, fresh bread from clay ovens, medjool dates and salads of local vegetables. A camel carries the camp kitchen for the desert section. Vegetarian and dietary needs catered for.
Photography tips
The Draa palmeries in the low morning sun, the ksar at Tamegroute, the M’hamid dunes at sunrise and the Milky Way over the desert bivouac are the signature shots. A wide-angle lens and fast prime for astrophotography are essential.
Staying safe on the route
A certified guide and experienced vehicle driver lead throughout. The desert section uses a camel team for carrying and navigation. Emergency communication and a first-aid kit are always carried.

Is this trek suitable for the full family?
The Draa is a moderate walk on easy terrain, but the long driving days and desert heat make it better suited to older teenagers and adults. We can arrange a gentler version with more vehicle time.
Is the Draa Valley the same as the Sahara?
The Draa runs along the southern edge of the Atlas and ends near the Sahara at M’hamid. The valley itself is lush oasis; only the final section approaches open desert dunes.
