Lalla Takerkoust is the reservoir just 45 minutes from Marrakech where the Haouz plains meet the first foothills of the Atlas — a turquoise lake ringed by red-earth hills and the closest genuine nature walk to the city. Its flat lakeside path, dam viewpoint and gentle shoreline make it our most accessible family walk, perfect for toddlers and grandparents alike.

History
The Takerkoust dam was built under the French Protectorate in the 1930s to irrigate the Marrakech plains, creating the reservoir that now anchors lakeside cafés, camel rides and easy walking. The surrounding hills have been grazing and farming land for local Amazigh families for generations.
Culture
A relaxed lakeside corner of the Marrakech countryside, where local families come to escape the city heat and Berber farmers still graze flocks on the red-earth hills above the dam. The cafés near the dam serve simple Moroccan food and mint tea with a view over the water.
Climate
Warm and dry like Marrakech, but the lake breeze keeps it cooler than the city. Mornings are pleasant year-round; summer afternoons are hot, so we finish by early afternoon.

A light picnic of fresh bread, fruit, cheese and water, with a full lunch available at a lakeside café on request. Vegetarian options are easily catered for.
Geography
The Takerkoust reservoir sits at around 600 m at the foot of the first Atlas foothills, roughly 45 km from Marrakech. The lakeside path and dam viewpoint are flat and easy, with red-earth hills rising beyond the water toward the Agafay desert.
Hiking opportunities
A short, flat lakeside loop along the shore and dam viewpoint — the most accessible walk in our programme, suitable from age 3 with a carrier. It pairs perfectly with an afternoon in the Agafay desert for sunset or a camel ride by the lake.

Accommodation
Day trip returning to Marrakech the same day. Lakeside cafés near the dam offer lunch and facilities, and the day can be extended with an afternoon in the nearby Agafay desert.
Safety
A gentle, flat walk with a local guide. We walk along the shore and dam viewpoint, not in the water; children should be supervised near the water’s edge as usual. No special insurance is required.
