Imlil Valley Loop — the classic first hike

Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal and the most popular day hike from Marrakech. The loop walks through walnut orchards and Berber villages to Aroumd (2,000 m), with views of the summit pyramid. It is easy, scenic and culturally rich — the perfect introduction to the Atlas. Private transfer from Marrakech is 1.5 hours each way.

Ourika Valley waterfalls

The Ourika Valley follows a river up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls, a series of seven cascades that are the reward at the top. The walk is easy on the lower reaches and moderate on the final scramble to the upper falls. It is green, cool and popular in summer — best started early to avoid the heat and the day-trippers.

Ouirgane National Park and the Kik Plateau

Ouirgane is a gentle, rolling landscape of juniper, olive and orchard — the easiest walking in the Atlas and ideal for families. The neighbouring Kik Plateau offers bigger views and a moderate climb to a dramatic escarpment edge overlooking the Lalla Takerkoust lake. Both are about an hour from Marrakech.

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Ouzoud is Morocco's highest waterfall — a 110 m cascade dropping through a red-rock gorge, with wild Barbary macaques in the surrounding trees. The walk descends to the base of the falls, crosses a small boat, and climbs back up the far side. It is easy, spectacular and a full day out from Marrakech (2.5 hr each way).

Agafay desert walk

Agafay is a rocky desert plateau 45 minutes from Marrakech — not sand dunes but a moon-like expanse of stone, scrub and distant Atlas views. A half-day walk here, often paired with a camel ride and a sunset tea, is the easiest way to taste the desert without the long drive to the Sahara.

Can I hike the Atlas Mountains in winter?
