Day 2: TREKKING DAY 1 — Into the Gorge Narrows

A full trekking day into the narrowing canyon. Walk from the kasbah zone up through the gorge as the walls close in and the colours deepen from ochre to deep crimson. Pass through three Amazigh villages, cross the river on stepping stones and reach the dramatic curved canyon section before overnight at a simple but comfortable upper-gorge guesthouse.

Landscape: Red canyon walls narrowing from 100 m to 20 m, palmeries, riverside hamlets..

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 6 hours walking. Poles useful on river crossings.

Day 3: TREKKING DAY 2 — Monkey Fingers & Plateau Walk

A second full trekking day walking further into the gorge to the Monkey Fingers rock formations — extraordinary sculpted limestone columns — before ascending to a plateau viewpoint with panoramic views over the Dades Valley. Descend on a different route back through gardens and walnut orchards to the main gorge guesthouse for a final night.

Landscape: Sculpted Monkey Fingers columns, plateau panoramas, orchard gardens..

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 5–6 hours walking. The Monkey Fingers are 8 km from the guesthouse.

Landscape: Canyon at dawn, then Atlas pass views on the return..

Villages and Berber culture

The Dades is home to Tachelhit-speaking Amazigh communities whose mud-brick villages and ksar granaries have stood for centuries. The valley is also the heart of Morocco’s rose harvest, celebrated every May with the Rose Festival in El Kelaa M’Gouna.

Photography tips

The Monkey Fingers rock formation in the upper gorge is one of Morocco’s most sculpted landscapes — photograph at dawn for side-lighting on the formations. The kasbah at golden hour and the canyon walls at midday (when light falls to the floor) are equally compelling.

Staying safe on the route

A certified guide leads throughout, with a first-aid kit. Canyon paths are clear and well-walked. The main risk is the long drive over the Atlas — we use professional, experienced drivers and the Tichka road is well-maintained.

Frequently asked questions

Is the drive over the Tizi n’Tichka worth it?

Absolutely — the pass road is one of Morocco’s great scenic drives, with the landscape changing dramatically from the Marrakech plains to the Atlas peaks to the red pre-Saharan valleys.

Is Aït Ben Haddou really worth stopping at?

Yes — the UNESCO kasbah is extraordinary, especially in the early morning before tour groups arrive. We time the stop to make the most of the light and the relative quiet.

Can I extend the trip to include the Todra Gorge?

Yes — both gorges can be combined in a 3-day itinerary; this is one of our most popular combinations. Contact us for a bespoke quote.
