The mountains on this page divide into two categories. Walk-up summits — Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), Mount Fuji (3,776 m) — require no climbing skills, no ropes and no technical gear. You walk to the top on a trail. The challenge is altitude, fitness and weather, not terrain. These are the mountains a fit, determined trekker can summit.

Technical peaks — Mont Blanc (4,805 m), the granite spires of Torres del Paine, the high Himalayan summits — require mountaineering skills, ropes, crampons and a guide, or are not summited at all by trekkers (Torres del Paine is a trekking destination, not a summit objective; Everest is climbed by mountaineers, not trekkers). This page focuses on the trekking experience of these mountains — the routes that let you walk among them — not their summits.

How to choose your first big mountain

If you have never stood above 3,000 m, start with Mount Toubkal (4,167 m, 2–3 days from Marrakech). It is the shortest, cheapest, most accessible 4,000 m summit in the world — a genuine altitude test with low commitment. The result tells you how your body responds to thin air before you invest in a bigger expedition.

If you have some altitude experience and 6–7 days, Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) is the classic first big summit — the highest walk-up in Africa, with mandatory guides and a real summit-night challenge. If you have 2–3 weeks and want the iconic Himalaya experience, Everest Base Camp (5,545 m) is the objective — not a summit, but a high-altitude trek to the foot of the world's highest peak. A common progression is Toubkal → Kilimanjaro → Everest Base Camp over several years.

Altitude — the defining factor

Above 4,000 m, altitude-sickness risk rises sharply and acclimatisation becomes the single most important factor — more than fitness, more than gear. Kilimanjaro's summit night (5,895 m) is a genuine altitude test; Toubkal's summit (4,167 m) is high enough to cause mild AMS but well below the danger zone for most people. Choose a route profile that ascends slowly — on Kilimanjaro, the Machame route's 6–7 day profile is safer than the 5-day Marangu profile.

Walk up slowly, take scheduled acclimatisation days, stay hydrated, and descend immediately if headache, nausea or dizziness worsen. Diamox is commonly used to aid acclimatisation — discuss it with your doctor before you travel. Fitness does not prevent altitude sickness; only a slow ascent profile does.

These mountains can be summited on foot — no ropes, no crampons, no climbing skills. The challenge is altitude, fitness and weather. They are the realistic summit objectives for trekkers, and each is a genuine high-altitude achievement.

Alpine and wilderness peaks (trekked around, not summited)

These mountains are too technical to summit as a trekker, but they define world-class trekking regions. You walk among them, to their bases or around their massifs — the Tour du Mont Blanc, the W Trek in Patagonia, the Everest Base Camp trek.

Plateau and escarpment mountains

The Drakensberg is a vast basalt escarpment rather than a single peak — its trekking is about reaching the plateau edge and traversing the amphitheatre wall. A different kind of mountain experience from a summit climb.

Seasonal information

When to climb or trek famous mountains

Kilimanjaro: January–March (warmer, clearer) and June–October (drier). Mount Toubkal: May–October for summer trekking; November–April becomes a winter mountaineering objective requiring crampons and ice axe. Mount Fuji: July–September only (the trail is officially closed outside this window). Mont Blanc / Tour du Mont Blanc: June–September. Torres del Paine: November–March (austral summer). Everest Base Camp: October–November and March–May.

Travelling outside these windows means snow, closed infrastructure or dangerous conditions. Toubkal in winter and Kilimanjaro in the long rains (April–May) are the most common seasonal mistakes — check current conditions with a local operator before booking.

Planning your trip

Guides, permits and insurance

Kilimanjaro requires a mandatory guide, booked through a licensed Tanzanian operator — independent climbing is not permitted. Mount Toubkal requires a registered guide under Toubkal National Park rules. Mount Fuji can be climbed independently during the official season. The Tour du Mont Blanc and Torres del Paine can be trekked independently. Everest Base Camp requires a licensed guide (since 2023) and national park permits.

For any mountain above 4,000 m, buy dedicated trekking insurance that covers your maximum altitude and emergency evacuation. Standard travel insurance almost always excludes high-altitude trekking. Verify the altitude ceiling in writing before you travel.
