Africa’s highest ski resort and a summer walking plateau

At 2,600 metres in the Toubkal massif, Oukaïmeden is Africa’s highest ski resort in winter and a breezy, flower-strewn walking plateau in summer. Just over an hour from Marrakech, it offers high-altitude scenery, ancient rock carvings and panoramic ridge walks with far less effort than a full Toubkal ascent.

History

Long a summer grazing ground (an agdal) shared by the surrounding Berber villages under traditional communal law, Oukaïmeden also holds some of Morocco’s finest prehistoric rock engravings, depicting daggers, shields and animals from the Bronze Age. The ski station was developed in the twentieth century, drawing on the reliable winter snow of the high plateau.

Culture

The mountain pastures are still governed by the centuries-old agdal system, which regulates when flocks may graze. Shepherds’ stone huts, seasonal markets and the nearby villages of the Ourika headwaters preserve traditional Amazigh mountain life alongside the modern ski infrastructure.

Climate

True high-mountain climate. Reliable snow from December to March; cool, clear and bright in summer (15–22°C by day) when the plateau turns green. Nights are cold year-round.

Best time to visit

December to March for skiing and snow walking; May to October for hiking, wildflowers and rock-art visits.

Food

Simple mountain fare — hearty tagine, harira, grilled meats and mint tea — served in resort cafes and Ourika Valley guesthouses.

Geography

Oukaïmeden sits on a broad glacial plateau at around 2,600 m beneath Jebel Oukaïmeden (3,273 m) and Angour (3,616 m), at the head of the Ourika Valley. A small lake, open pastures and surrounding ridges make it a natural amphitheatre for high walking.

Hiking opportunities

Summer walking here is superb and accessible: gentle strolls around the lake and pastures, moderate ascents of Jebel Oukaïmeden for wide Atlas panoramas, and the more demanding traverse toward Angour ridge. The high starting altitude means big views for modest effort, and it is an excellent acclimatisation walk before Toubkal.

Getting there

Oukaïmeden is about 75 km from Marrakech — a scenic 90-minute private transfer up the Ourika Valley on a good tarmac road. We include air-conditioned transfers.

Accommodation

A handful of mountain hotels and refuges operate at the resort, busiest in ski season. Many visitors come as a day trip from Marrakech or combine it with a night in the Ourika Valley below.

Safety

The altitude is significant — ascend gradually and stay hydrated. In winter, mountain-weather and avalanche awareness matter; in summer, protect against strong sun and sudden storms. Warm layers are essential year-round.
