Best time to go

Year-round, with spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) the most comfortable windows.

Clear in summer and autumn; the pass occasionally closes in winter after heavy snow (December to February), so check conditions before travelling. Spring is beautiful with alpine flowers on the upper slopes.

Fitness and preparation

Atlas trekking rewards endurance over raw strength. Aim for three to four cardio sessions a week — brisk walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing with a loaded daypack — for eight to twelve weeks before a multi-day trek.

On summit and high routes, a slow conversational pace and constant hydration matter more than any training PR. Train on terrain similar to what you will face and break in every piece of footwear well in advance.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Above 3,000 metres the air thins and altitude illness becomes a real factor — fitness does not prevent it, only pacing and acclimatisation do. A slow, steady pace and constant hydration are your best protection on a single high day.

Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell — never hide symptoms to protect a summit. Comprehensive insurance covering trekking to 2,260 m is required.

What to pack

• Broken-in hiking boots with ankle support (trail shoes are fine for easy day hikes).
• Layered clothing — moisture-wicking base, fleece mid, waterproof shell.
• A 25–35 litre daypack with 2 litres of water capacity.
• Sun protection — high-SPF sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, lip balm.
• A headtorch with spare batteries.
• Personal medications and blister plasters.

Permits, guides and logistics

Frequently asked questions

Is this worth doing or just a minor side trip?

It works best as part of a journey to or from the south (Dades, Todra, Merzouga) — the walk adds genuine interest to what would otherwise be a long driving day. As a standalone day from Marrakech, it is pleasant but brief.

Is the Telouet kasbah worth visiting?

Yes — the early 20th-century palace of Thami El Glaoui is extraordinary — opulent carved cedar and painted ceilings in an otherwise abandoned mud-brick complex. It is one of Morocco’s most atmospheric ruins.
