When to go, how hard it really is, and exactly how to prepare for agafay desert luxury camp & sunset — season-by-season weather, difficulty, fitness, altitude, packing, permits and cost.
Year-round, with spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) the most comfortable windows.
Warm, dry days most of the year with cool to cold nights — desert temperatures swing sharply after dark, so always pack a warm layer. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer days are very hot (activities shift to dawn and dusk); winter nights are cold but the camps are heated.
| Season | Conditions | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–Jun) | Wildflowers, snowmelt rivers, mild days | Beautiful and popular — book early |
| Summer (Jul–Aug) | Hot valleys, pleasant altitude, dry | Very hot — early starts only |
| Autumn (Sep–Oct) | Stable, clear, comfortable temperatures | The best all-round window |
| Winter (Dec–Mar) | Warm days, cold desert nights | Quiet and rewarding with layers |
This trek is rated Easy. Easy and entirely optional. Walks are 1–2 hours on gentle stony tracks with minimal ascent. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels; those who prefer can relax at camp instead of walking.
No prior trekking experience is needed — sturdy shoes, water and a steady pace are enough.
Atlas trekking rewards endurance over raw strength. Aim for three to four cardio sessions a week — brisk walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing with a loaded daypack — for eight to twelve weeks before a multi-day trek.
On summit and high routes, a slow conversational pace and constant hydration matter more than any training PR. Train on terrain similar to what you will face and break in every piece of footwear well in advance.
A licensed local guide leads every departure — this is a legal requirement in the Toubkal region and a genuine safety benefit everywhere. We handle all refuge bookings, mule support, transfers and permits on your behalf.
Private air-conditioned transfers from Marrakech to the trailhead and back are included on every trek. Airport pick-ups can be arranged on request.
Pricing is transparent: a trek cost plus a transfer cost based on road distance from Marrakech. See the full pricing breakdown on the tour page.
What you are paying for is a licensed guide, mountain meals, accommodation, mule support and private transfers — the logistics that make a remote mountain day safe and enjoyable.
No — Agafay is a rocky, hilly stone desert, not dunes. Its appeal is the lunar scenery, silence and proximity to Marrakech. For classic golden dunes and camel caravans, choose our Merzouga Sahara trip.
Very. Expect a proper bed, linens, an en-suite bathroom with hot shower, lanterns and heating for cold nights. It is glamping, not roughing it.
An optional short camel ride can be arranged at camp. The core experience is the sunset walk, dinner and stargazing, so camels are an add-on rather than the main event.
