Mgoun Massif Traverse — 6 Days: Best Time, Difficulty & How to Prepare

When to go, how hard it really is, and exactly how to prepare for mgoun massif traverse — 6 days — season-by-season weather, difficulty, fitness, altitude, packing, permits and cost.

Best time to go

Jun – Sep

The traverse is a summer objective: June to September give warm days, cold clear nights at altitude and low river levels for safe gorge wading. Outside these months snow blocks the passes and the gorges become dangerous. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible on the plateau, so summit days start early.

How hard is it, honestly

This trek is rated Strenuous. Strenuous — the hardest trek we run. Six consecutive days, a 4,068 m summit day of up to 8 hours, cold high camps and hours of gorge wading over slippery rock. You must have solid multi-day trekking experience and strong, resilient fitness.

You need genuine multi-day hill fitness, comfort with long days on rough ground, and, above 3,000 m, patience with acclimatisation.

Honest difficulty assessment

Fitness and preparation

Atlas trekking rewards endurance over raw strength. Aim for three to four cardio sessions a week — brisk walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing with a loaded daypack — for eight to twelve weeks before a multi-day trek.

On summit and high routes, a slow conversational pace and constant hydration matter more than any training PR. Train on terrain similar to what you will face and break in every piece of footwear well in advance.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Above 3,000 metres the air thins and altitude illness becomes a real factor — fitness does not prevent it, only pacing and acclimatisation do. Our multi-day itinerary builds in time to adjust before the highest sections.

Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell — never hide symptoms to protect a summit. Comprehensive insurance covering trekking to 4,068 m is required.

Frequently asked questions

How does the M’Goun compare to Toubkal?

It is longer, wilder and more remote. The summit is only 100 m lower but the trek is six days through roadless terrain, with high camps and river-gorge walking. It demands genuine multi-day experience, whereas Toubkal can be done in two.

What is the gorge wading like?

For several hours you walk in and beside the Mgoun river between high red walls, crossing repeatedly on slippery rock with wet feet likely. It is spectacular but requires sure footing; your guide chooses safe lines and we only run it in low-water summer conditions.

Do I need my own camping equipment?

Tents, mats and all camp kit are provided and carried by mules. You bring a four-season sleeping bag, personal clothing and a daypack. It is fully supported wild camping, not self-sufficient backpacking.
