The route in overview

You drive five hours south from Marrakech to a world of pink granite, visit Jean Véram’s painted boulders at sunset, walk the Ammeln valley circuit between historic villages and finish with a granite ridge sunrise.

Across 4 days / 3 nights you cover around 50 km, reaching 1,800 m, walking with a Berber guide who sets the pace to your group.

Day 1: TRANSFER DAY — Marrakech to Tafraoute

Depart Marrakech at 07:00. Drive south over the Tizi n’Test (2,100 m) or via Agadir and Tiznit into the Anti-Atlas — arriving in Tafraoute at approximately 14:00. An afternoon orientation walk to the Painted Rocks (Jean Véram’s coloured boulders in their granite setting) at the golden hour before dinner at the guesthouse.

Landscape: Mountain passes, Anti-Atlas valleys and the extraordinary rose-granite Tafraoute basin..

Good to know: TRANSFER DAY: ~5 hours driving + 1.5 hours easy walk. Not a full trekking day.

Day 2: TREKKING DAY 1 — Ammeln Valley Circuit

A full circuit of the Ammeln valley, passing through 26 Amazigh villages on ancient footpaths and mule tracks. Walk through almond and argan orchards, ascend to a granite ridge with panoramic views over the valley, and share lunch in a village family home. Return to Tafraoute in the late afternoon.

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 6–7 hours. The almond blossom in February is extraordinary.

Day 3: TREKKING DAY 2 — Anti-Atlas Ridge Walk

A different route today — ascending to the Anti-Atlas ridge above Tafraoute for panoramic views across the Jebel Lkest massif and south toward the Sahara. Walk a high ridge traverse between granite tors and Amazigh shepherd camps before descending through a different valley back to town.

Good to know: FULL TREKKING DAY: 5–6 hours. Less village, more ridge and open granite country.

Day 4: TRANSFER DAY — Tafraoute to Marrakech

A final sunrise walk among the granite boulders above Tafraoute — the rock glows deep pink and amber in the early light. Depart at 07:30 for the return drive to Marrakech, arriving by mid-afternoon.

Good to know: TRANSFER DAY: 1 hour sunrise walk + ~5 hours driving. Arrive Marrakech ~15:00.

Villages and Berber culture

The Ammeln valley preserves one of the most intact Tachelhit-speaking Amazigh communities in Morocco — the 26 villages each have their own architecture, water-sharing systems and calendar of festivals. Jean Véram’s painted boulders (1984) are an unusual and striking intervention in the landscape.

Food on the trail

Anti-Atlas cuisine is distinct from the north: almond honey, argan oil and amlou (almond-argan paste) for breakfast; tagines with local herbs and valley vegetables for lunch and dinner. Vegetarian options are naturally available; bottled water provided.

Photography tips

The pink granite boulders in the golden hour before sunset and the almond blossom in February are world-class photographic subjects. The high granite ridge at sunrise with the valley below is extraordinary. Bring a 24–70 mm zoom and a wide prime for the boulders.

Staying safe on the route

A local Tachelhit-speaking guide leads throughout, with a first-aid kit. The paths are clear and well-maintained; the only significant risk is the long driving sections on the return.

Is Tafraoute worth the long drive from Marrakech?

For those who want something genuinely off the beaten path, yes emphatically. The landscape, culture and tranquility are completely different from anything in the High Atlas, and the almond blossom in February is one of Morocco’s great natural spectacles.

What language do the local guides speak?

Our Tafraoute guides are native Tachelhit speakers (the southern Berber language), and also speak Arabic and French. They have a deep local knowledge of the Ammeln valley communities.

Can this be combined with Agadir or the Atlantic coast?

Yes — Tafraoute is roughly equidistant between Marrakech and Agadir, making a combined itinerary natural. We can arrange a one-way route ending at the coast.
