The rooftop of North Africa

At 4,167 metres, Jebel Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and the Arab world — a non-technical but demanding ascent rewarded by a horizon that stretches from the Sahara to the Atlantic.

Region: High Atlas · Altitude: 4,167 m

History

First summited in 1923 by the Marquis de Segonzac and his party, Toubkal has drawn mountaineers for a century. Its refuges and mule trails now form one of Africa’s classic high-altitude journeys.

Culture

The ascent passes through Aroumd and the pilgrimage shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, a whitewashed marabout still revered by local Berber communities.

Climate

Alpine and exposed. Summer summit days are clear but cold at altitude; winter demands crampons, ice axe and mountaineering experience.

Best time to visit

May to October for trekking. February to April for a genuine snow ascent with technical support.

Food

Hearty refuge dinners — harira soup, couscous and tagine — restore energy before the pre-dawn summit push.
