The Anti-Atlas is warmer and drier than the High Atlas — October to April is ideal, with day temperatures of 18–25°C. February brings the extraordinary almond blossom, when the entire valley turns white and pink. Summer is very hot (35°C+) and not recommended.

How hard is it, honestly

This trek is rated Moderate. Moderate. The Ammeln circuit is the longest day (18 km, 600 m ascent) on mule tracks and footpaths; the other days are shorter. The granite paths are rougher than the High Atlas mule trails but the pace is relaxed.

A reasonable base of walking fitness makes the day comfortable; no technical skills are required.

Fitness and preparation

Atlas trekking rewards endurance over raw strength. Aim for three to four cardio sessions a week — brisk walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing with a loaded daypack — for eight to twelve weeks before a multi-day trek.

On summit and high routes, a slow conversational pace and constant hydration matter more than any training PR. Train on terrain similar to what you will face and break in every piece of footwear well in advance.

What to pack

• Broken-in hiking boots with ankle support (trail shoes are fine for easy day hikes).
• Layered clothing — moisture-wicking base, fleece mid, waterproof shell.
• A 25–35 litre daypack with 2 litres of water capacity.
• Sun protection — high-SPF sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, lip balm.
• A headtorch with spare batteries.
• Personal medications and blister plasters.
• A three-season sleeping bag liner or bag for refuge/camp nights.
• Trekking poles to save your knees on descents.
• A dry bag and power bank for electronics.

Permits, guides and logistics

A licensed local guide leads every departure — this is a legal requirement in the Toubkal region and a genuine safety benefit everywhere. We handle all refuge bookings, mule support, transfers and permits on your behalf.

Private air-conditioned transfers from Marrakech to the trailhead and back are included on every trek. Airport pick-ups can be arranged on request.

Is Tafraoute worth the long drive from Marrakech?

For those who want something genuinely off the beaten path, yes emphatically. The landscape, culture and tranquility are completely different from anything in the High Atlas, and the almond blossom in February is one of Morocco’s great natural spectacles.

What language do the local guides speak?

Our Tafraoute guides are native Tachelhit speakers (the southern Berber language), and also speak Arabic and French. They have a deep local knowledge of the Ammeln valley communities.

Can this be combined with Agadir or the Atlantic coast?

Yes — Tafraoute is roughly equidistant between Marrakech and Agadir, making a combined itinerary natural. We can arrange a one-way route ending at the coast.
