Jan – Apr

Deep winter brings sub-zero temperatures, biting summit winds and frequent fresh snow. Between storms the air is astonishingly clear and cold. We watch avalanche and wind forecasts daily and choose the summit window accordingly — flexibility is part of winter climbing.

How hard is it, honestly

This trek is rated Strenuous. Strenuous and technical for a "trekking" peak. Firm snow demands crampons and confident foot placement; the summit cwm steepens to angles where a slip must be arrested. Full winter fitness and a head for exposure are needed.

You need genuine multi-day hill fitness, comfort with long days on rough ground, and, above 3,000 m, patience with acclimatisation.

Honest difficulty assessment

Fitness and preparation

Atlas trekking rewards endurance over raw strength. Aim for three to four cardio sessions a week — brisk walking, hiking, cycling or stair climbing with a loaded daypack — for eight to twelve weeks before a multi-day trek.

On summit and high routes, a slow conversational pace and constant hydration matter more than any training PR. Train on terrain similar to what you will face and break in every piece of footwear well in advance.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Above 3,000 metres the air thins and altitude illness becomes a real factor — fitness does not prevent it, only pacing and acclimatisation do. Our multi-day itinerary builds in time to adjust before the highest sections.

Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell — never hide symptoms to protect a summit. Comprehensive insurance covering trekking to 4,167 m is required.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous winter mountaineering experience?

It is strongly recommended. We teach crampon and ice-axe skills, but the summit still demands confidence on steep firm snow, so a background of winter hill walking or an Alpine course helps enormously.

Is technical equipment provided?

Yes — crampons and ice axe are included and fitted at the refuge. You supply insulated mountaineering boots (B2/B3), warm layers, gloves and goggles; we can advise on rental in Marrakech.

What happens if conditions are unsafe on summit day?

We add a spare acclimatisation night precisely to give weather flexibility. If avalanche or storm risk is high we adjust the objective or descend. Safety always outranks the summit.
