Villages and Berber culture

Aït Bougmez, the "Happy Valley", is one of Morocco's most beautiful and traditional — flat-roofed pisé villages, communal granaries and terraced fields worked exactly as for centuries. In the gorges you pass tiny irrigation-fed hamlets where visitors are rare and hospitality genuine and unforced.

Food on the trail

A dedicated trek cook produces remarkable food from a mule kitchen: soups, tagines, couscous, pasta, fresh salads while supplies last, bread, eggs, plenty of fruit, nuts and hot drinks. Breakfasts are hearty, trail lunches generous, and evening meals a highlight of camp life. All dietary needs catered for with notice.

Photography tips

The M’Goun ridge at sunrise offers 360-degree summit panoramas; the Tarkeddid plateau glows at golden hour; and the red gorges, with light bouncing between the walls onto the river, are unforgettable. Protect gear from water in the canyons and carry spare batteries for the cold nights.

Staying safe on the route

An accredited expedition guide, cook and muleteers support the group, with comprehensive first aid, altitude monitoring and detailed knowledge of gorge water levels — the single biggest hazard. Evacuation from the interior is slow, so we screen fitness carefully and insist on insurance covering remote trekking to 4,100 m.

Frequently asked questions

How does the M’Goun compare to Toubkal?

It is longer, wilder and more remote. The summit is only 100 m lower but the trek is six days through roadless terrain, with high camps and river-gorge walking. It demands genuine multi-day experience, whereas Toubkal can be done in two.

What is the gorge wading like?

For several hours you walk in and beside the Mgoun river between high red walls, crossing repeatedly on slippery rock with wet feet likely. It is spectacular but requires sure footing; your guide chooses safe lines and we only run it in low-water summer conditions.

Do I need my own camping equipment?

Tents, mats and all camp kit are provided and carried by mules. You bring a four-season sleeping bag, personal clothing and a daypack. It is fully supported wild camping, not self-sufficient backpacking.
