What ouzoud waterfalls — day trip is really like — detailed route, day-by-day experience, viewpoints, villages, culture, food, photography and local tips that make the trek.
You descend shaded paths through olive groves to viewpoints over the falls, take a small boat to the misty base, watch the macaques in the trees, and lunch on a cliff terrace above the pools.
Across 1 day you cover around 5 km, reaching 1,100 m, walking with a Berber guide who sets the pace to your group.
Scenic drive to Ouzoud, descend to the falls, boat to the base, lunch overlooking the cascades.
Landscape: Waterfalls and olive groves..
Good to know: Watch belongings around the macaques.
The area around Ouzoud is dotted with old stone flour mills still turned by the river, olive presses and Berber hamlets. Watching a traditional mill grind wheat, or seeing olives pressed in autumn, connects the spectacle of the falls to the working land around it.
Lunch on a cliff-terrace restaurant overlooking the falls: tagine or grilled fish and meats, Moroccan salads, bread and fruit, with mint tea and the roar of water beside you. Bottled water is provided; vegetarian options available on request.
Late morning to midday light reaches into the gorge and lights the rainbows in the spray; a slow shutter silks the cascades. The macaques in dappled light make wonderful wildlife portraits — use a longer lens and keep your distance.
A guide leads the descent and manages the boat crossing, carrying first aid and water. The macaques are wild — do not feed or touch them and guard food and phones, as they are quick and bold. Damp steps and rocks near the water require care.
The Barbary macaques are wild but very reliably seen in the oaks and olive groves around the falls, especially on the descent. Please never feed or touch them — observe from a respectful distance.
About 2.5 hours each way through the Middle Atlas. It is a longer day than the nearer valleys, so we start early and the scenic countryside drive is part of the experience.
A short traditional boat trip to the misty base of the falls is available on the day (a small tip for the boatman is customary). It is optional but a lovely way to feel the spray up close.
