The route in overview

We add an extra refuge night to build acclimatisation and teach snow skills — self-arrest, cramponing, kicking steps. Summit morning is cold and committing, the reward a diamond-clear panorama over a white Atlas with the desert shimmering far beyond.

Across 3 days / 2 nights you cover around 26 km, reaching 4,167 m, walking with a Berber guide who sets the pace to your group.

Villages and Berber culture

Winter reveals the toughness of Amazigh mountain life — smoke rising from snow-bound Aroumd, animals brought indoors, tracks broken by hand between houses. Village hospitality is even warmer in the cold; a glass of tea by the fire is a genuine welcome, not a performance.

Food on the trail

Warm, calorie-dense mountain cooking: harira, tagines, pasta, plenty of bread, nuts, dried fruit and hot sweet tea to fight the cold. A hot breakfast precedes the summit push and a thermos of hot drink is carried. Tell us dietary needs in advance.

Photography tips

Blue-hour and sunrise on the summit ridge over a snow-white range is unforgettable — but protect batteries from the cold and bring spares. Frozen cascades, spindrift plumes off the summit and the refuge glowing at dusk all reward the effort. A lens cloth for spindrift is essential.

Staying safe on the route

Winter-accredited guides carry technical kit, first aid and monitor snowpack and weather continuously. You are taught self-arrest before the summit day. We turn back for avalanche risk, whiteout or frostbite danger without hesitation. Insurance must cover winter mountaineering above 4,000 m.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous winter mountaineering experience?

It is strongly recommended. We teach crampon and ice-axe skills, but the summit still demands confidence on steep firm snow, so a background of winter hill walking or an Alpine course helps enormously.

Is technical equipment provided?

Yes — crampons and ice axe are included and fitted at the refuge. You supply insulated mountaineering boots (B2/B3), warm layers, gloves and goggles; we can advise on rental in Marrakech.

What happens if conditions are unsafe on summit day?

We add a spare acclimatisation night precisely to give weather flexibility. If avalanche or storm risk is high we adjust the objective or descend. Safety always outranks the summit.
